Advising Model Update

March 30, 2021 / General NOVA News

Many thanks to all who provided questions and feedback regarding the Advising Model. The Advising Model taskforce received the feedback and provided a response to College Senate last week.

The Advising Model is grounded in four tenets: 1) leverage the use of technology, 2) provide timely and on-going holistic student support, 3) professional development for faculty and staff and 4) build capacity through an institutional prioritizing of advising. Our work began in Fall 2020 to expand our use of Navigate in ways that improve connections with advisors and supports student connection through our use of early alerts, appointments, and communication campaigns. We’ve also incorporated case management and retention strategies from the Pathway to the Baccalaureate model. Earlier this semester we launched “Spring Training” in the Advising Academy to offer opportunities for colleagues to grow their expertise as part of our advisor career pathway redesign. We are excited to share that NOVA has recently committed to hiring between 10-15 advisors to support our workforce and academic pathway students.

Advising redesign has been a “labor of love” at NOVA for many years and we are excited to see the culmination of that work come to fruition in support of NOVA students and their success! The advising model document with feedback responses will be posted on the intranet later this week.

Many thanks to the following individuals who served on the advising model taskforce; Chad Knights, Molly Lynch, Rhonda Myers, Ellen Fancher-Ruiz, Wende Ruffin-Lowry, Paula Ford, Steve Rakoff and Kat Hitchcock. Please direct any advising implementation questions to VP Student Services, Frances Villagran-Glover.
