Direct Enrollment:  Math Changes

April 13, 2021 / General NOVA News

The implementation of direct enrollment will result in significant changes for the math discipline. We will see a shift in how students are placed and anticipate that most students will be placed into college-level math courses. In addition, developmental math will be redesigned.

  • Recent high school graduates will be placed according to their high school GPA and whether they have taken Algebra II. Non-traditional students are permitted to take entry-level courses (MTH 111, 133, 154, 161 and 167) and are provided with guidance to help them make an informed decision. Continuing students are placed using a crosswalk developed by VCCS.
  • MTT will be offered for the last time during the summer 2021 term. Starting fall 2021, MTT will be replaced with MDE 10 and MDE 60. These courses incorporate lecture, engaging lessons and collaborative, hands-on work during class.
  • New co-requisite courses, MDE 54 and MDE 61 provide support for MTH 154 and MTH 161, respectively. These courses (which replace MCR 4 and MCR 6) are designed to provide “just in time” support to help students be successful in the college-level math course.
