English and ESL Changes for Direct Enrollment
In fall 2021, NOVA will implement new direct enrollment procedures for placement into English classes. The goal of direct enrollment is to move away from using single-measure placement (VPT/Accuplacer) and toward using multiple measures for placement.
Changes coming in fall 2021 include two new English Direct Enrollment (EDE) courses, which will replace the existing ENF 1, ENF 2 and ENF 3, and one new co-requisite English as a Second Language (ESL) course.
- EDE 10 is a three-credit course for students who earned a high school GPA under 2.0. This class replaces ENF 1 (eight credits) and focuses on critical reading, writing, and thinking skills. Upon successful completion, students will move to ENG 111 with EDE 11.
- EDE 11 is a three-credit co-requisite course for students who earned a high school GPA of 2.0 to 2.99. This course focuses on supporting the reading and writing tasks students complete in ENG 111. EDE 11 will be paired with ENG 111 in the same way that the current ENF 3 is paired with ENG 111. ENF 2 is being discontinued.
- ESL 95 is a new three credit ESL course being piloted as an optional co-requisite alternative to EDE 11 for English language learners (ELLs). The goal of ESL 95 is to provide equitable access to the linguistic (rather than developmental) supports ELLs need to succeed in ENG 111.
