NOVA’s Facilities Management Needs Your Assistance

April 23, 2021 / General NOVA News

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has listed Accotink Creek as an “impaired water” due to sediment and chloride impacts to the creek. NOVA’s stormwater permit allows the College to discharge stormwater into Accotink Creek. To reduce the impacts, the DEQ has developed a Sediment Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) and a separate Chloride TMDL for the creek. A TMDL is a “pollution diet” that identifies the maximum amount of a pollutant that the waterway can receive and still maintain water quality standards. Under NOVA’s stormwater permit, it is required that we develop an action plan for each of these pollutants.

As part of NOVA’s commitment to the environment and compliance with Virginia’s regulations concerning stormwater pollution prevention, NOVA has developed a draft “Accotink Creek Sediment Total Maximum Daily Load Action Plan” and a draft “Accotink Creek Chloride Total Maximum Daily Load Action Plan.”

Facilities is requesting that staff and faculty review the two separate action plans and leave any comments for consideration to be incorporated into the final documents. These will be available for the next 15 days.

We are pleased you are taking an interest in seeing what NOVA is doing to prevent stormwater pollution on our Annandale Campus.
