Green Tip Tuesday: You Can Recycle Your Disposable Masks and Gloves

May 11, 2021 / General NOVA News

In light of Governor Northam’s Executive Order 77 (Virginia Leading by Example to Reduce Plastic Pollution and Solid Waste), did you know that plastic pollution is such a problem that a recent study estimated, by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish?

Plastic pollution has worsened as a result of COVID-19 and one of the contributing factors is single-use protective face masks. More information is here.

What can you do to alleviate this issue and still comply with NOVA’s Face Covering policy? A great solution is to make or buy a reusable face covering that adheres to CDC guidelines in preventing the spread of COVID-19. You can even get them at the NOVA Bookstores. There are lots of great videos to help you make your own face mask, and there are lots to purchase that are made from recycled plastic.

Do you prefer single use face masks? Don’t worry! NOVA’s got you covered. NOVA has partnered with Terracycle to recycle masks, gloves and other PPE. Look for these Zero Waste recycling boxes on campuses. They accept masks, gloves, safety glasses and other non-contaminated items. More details are available here.

If you’re not coming to campus, make sure you dispose of masks and gloves properly so they don’t end up in the ocean.

Recently, the documentary “Plastic Wars,” from Frontline and NPR, estimated that no more than 10% of plastic produced has ever been recycled. The documentary is available to stream for free.

You can learn more about the College’s on-going efforts on the Sustainability website and stay tuned for the College’s and VCCS’ plan to reduce plastic on campus.
