NOVA Chosen To Establish Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Center

May 13, 2021 / General NOVA News

NOVA has been chosen as home for one of the new 2021 Truth, Racial, Healing and Transformation Centers. Launched by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Centers focus on addressing the historical and contemporary effects of racism while also engaging in community-based action to bring about sustainable and impactful change.

To begin the process, members of NOVA’s Administrative Council (or their designee) will attend the 2021 AAC&U Virtual TRHT Campus Center Institute in June. At the Institute, NOVA team members will learn from national leaders, connect with mentor colleges and identify best practices for implementing the principles of TRHT and creating safe TRHT spaces on every NOVA campus.

Chief Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Officer, Dr. Nathan Carter notes, “At its core, the Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Center program is about narrative change. By safely speaking our lived experiences, acknowledging racism and injustice and truly listening to each other we are better equipped to see the humanity in another person and work together to solve problems.”

The AAC&U Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Center program aligns with NOVA’s current Strategic Plan, the VCCS Strategic Plan and compliments our ongoing efforts to support Inclusive Excellence.
