Meet the NOVA QEP Implementation Committee!
One important part of a college’s reaccreditation process as defined by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission (SACSCOC) is for a college to establish a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The QEP is a five-year project and commitment to develop an initiative that focuses on improving specific student learning outcomes and/or success.
NOVA’s journey to identify a QEP topic for its current reaccreditation process started in the fall of 2019. The QEP Steering Committee worked hard to review submitted proposals and identified a central focus area. The QEP Steering Committee completed its work in the early summer of 2020.
During late summer 2020, the QEP Development Committee was formed. The main role of the QEP Development Committee was to review existing data and literature related to the QEP central focus area and work to further develop and refine the direction of the QEP. NOVA’s QEP Development Committee did exceptional work to refine the focus area during the pandemic. Special thanks to Ms. Emily Miller and Dr. Tamara Warren Chinyani for leading the 40 person QEP Development Team that was comprised of teaching faculty and staff. Based on their work, the central QEP topic area was refined to focus on improving writing skills for students in ENG 111 while also aligning the QEP with the equity-based objectives of NOVA’s current Strategic Plan and the specific commitment to reaching equity in student outcomes while supporting the college’s commitment to Inclusive Excellence. (Please see Objective 2, Objective 4, and Objective 5).
As we enter the next phase of the process, the new QEP Implementation Team will continue the work ahead.
Given that the QEP proposal topic area focuses on improving writing skills, enhancing equity-based professional development for faculty and improving tutoring and other support structures it was imperative that the new committee be comprised of teaching faculty from English as well as other areas of the college impacted by the shift to informed placement.
Please join me in welcoming the new QEP Implementation Committee!
Going forward, a monthly college-wide update on the QEP proposal and its status will be offered by the Co-Chairs of the QEP Implementation Committee.
