June Book Club Invitation from NOVA’s Grassroots Group
The NOVA Grassroots Group will host a June Book Club featuring a selection of five books and two ways to participate: synchronous and asynchronous. Each participant will choose one book to read. In the synchronous option, participants will meet via Zoom. In the asynchronous option, participants will participate via Canvas. Both options will be held at the end of June (dates forthcoming).
The five books chosen for the June Book Club are:
- Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present by Harriet A. Washington
- Kindred by Octavia Butler
- Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson
- Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad
- A Race Is a Nice Thing to Have: A Guide to Being a White Person or Understanding the White Persons in Your Life by Janet Helm
If you are interested in participating in the June book club, please email grassroots@nvcc.edu by June 1 with both your book selection and whether you will participate synchronously or asynchronously.
The Grassroots Group for Advocacy and Equity is a collective of NOVA staff, professional faculty and teaching faculty interested in working together to promote diversity, equity and inclusion at the college. It was founded by Margarita Martinez (AN) and Indigo Eriksen (WO) during the 2020 summer following global protests for racial justice. The Grassroots Group meets monthly via Zoom to share experiences and knowledge and to promote action-oriented change aimed at dismantling white supremacy. If you are interested in being a part of the Grassroots Group, please email grassroots@nvcc.edu for more information.
