Green Tip Tuesday! You can Recycle your Disposable Masks and Gloves

July 27, 2021 / General NOVA News

In light of Governor Northam’s Executive Order 77Virginia Leading by Example to Reduce Plastic Pollution and Solid Waste, did you know that plastic pollution is such a problem that a recent study estimated that, by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish?

Plastic pollution has worsened as a result of COVID-19 and one of the contributing factors is single-use protective face masks. (More information is here.)

What can you do to alleviate this issue? While face coverings are no longer mandatory on campus, if you choose to wear one, reusable face coverings are available at the NOVA Bookstores. There are lots of great videos to help you make your own, and there are lots to purchase that are made from recycled plastic.

If you prefer single-use face masks, NOVA has partnered with Terracycle to recycle masks, gloves, and other PPE. Look for these Zero Waste recycling boxes on campuses. They accept masks, gloves, safety glasses, and other non-contaminated items. They are currently located under the below graphic on every campus: AL – Bisdorf library entrance; AN – CA near Parking and CS 2nd floor lounge; LO – LC Café, LS entrance, and LA entrance; MA – MP Lobby; MEC – 2nd and 3rd floor common areas; WO – WS Info desk; and Pender 3 info desk.

If you’re not coming to campus make sure you dispose of masks and gloves properly so they don’t end up in the ocean.

Recently, the documentary “Plastic Wars,” from Frontline and NPR, estimated that no more than 10% of plastic produced has ever been recycled. The documentary is available to stream for free here.
