The Office of Wellness and Mental Health is pleased to announce two Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training sessions for fall 2021 for NOVA staff and faculty. Mental Health First Aid is a certification course that teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives participants the skills needed to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Participants will complete a two-hour, self-paced online class, and then participate in two afternoon instructor-led video conferences.

What it covers:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental illness
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use
  • How to interact with a person in crisis
  • How to connect a person with help
  • NEW: Expanded content on trauma, addiction and self-care

The first virtual training session will be offered Thursday, October 14 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. AND Thursday, October 21 from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. The second virtual training session will be Tuesday, November 9 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. AND Tuesday, November 16 from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.
