NOVA’s QEP Proposal, “Writing Ourselves In” Is Now Available

September 7, 2021 / General NOVA News

Northern Virginia Community College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). As part of the decennial reaffirmation process, NOVA must submit a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) in advance of the SACSCOC on-site review by the Commission. The submission of the QEP proposal represents a significant step in the accreditation process signifying NOVA is ready to receive formal feedback on the QEP proposal from SACSCOC.

At this time, NOVA is pleased to share the institution’s QEP Proposal, Writing Ourselves In: Developing Our Voices for Excellence and Equity.

As mentioned during Fall 2021 Convocation, NOVA’s QEP was truly a team effort following a two-year collaborative process involving various stakeholders across the college.  The collaborative process is detailed in the document.

The goals of Writing Ourselves In: Developing Our Voices for Excellence and Equity are (1) to improve the writing skills of students in ENG 111 courses and (2) to strengthen ENG 111 students’ ability to use writing to analyze their ideas, experiences and identities. To meet these goals, the QEP will focus on two Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): (1) students will produce writing that is effective for the audience and purpose of the assignment, and (2) students will analyze some aspect of their identities, cultures, and/or communities via their writing. NOVA has also set an institutional goal of improving and achieving equity in student success rates in ENG 111.

A webpage on nvcc.edu with more information about our QEP will be shared with the entire college community in the coming weeks.
