New Government and Community Relations Committee App. Deadline, Sept. 17

September 8, 2021 / Faculty/Staff Highlights

Your College Senate has created a new senate committee, the Government and Community Relations Committee. According to the resolution creating the committee, it will “provide a communication link between the College community and the community it serves, … keep the College community informed of local and state proposals and actions that will have an impact upon the College, and … assist the president in informing community and state groups of positions taken by the College.” All of this means that the Government and Community Relations Committee will spread the good word about NOVA to elected officials and other public officials. How will we do this? Well, the Committee will make those decisions when it meets, but some ideas include annual bus trips to Richmond to visit the Virginia Capitol and legislators, attendance at area conferences and hosted visits of area officials. All of these interactions will lead officials to better appreciate NOVA, and generate improved civic understanding and engagement by the NOVA community. Once members are selected, committee officers will be chosen, decisions will be made and pathways will be blazed. It doesn’t matter what your job at NOVA is, what your political beliefs are, or what you already know about local leaders: your ideas are welcome. And who isn’t looking for some creative APPDO goals?!?

The College Senate needs three volunteers from each campus (or Forum Council). One of the three volunteers must be a member of the Forum Council’s Senate delegation.  The Senate appointee will serve a one-year term on the Committee. And two members can be anyone from the community the Forum Council represents. These two members will serve on the committee for two-year terms.

Interested? Please complete this simple Google Form. Deadline to complete form is Constitution Day, Friday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m.!

The appropriate Forum Council will receive its share of the form entries and pick its three members for the Committee, and then the Senate will work to finish the process.  Please know that all meetings are open, and anyone can be a part of this effort; even if they are not one of the three Forum Council appointees.
