Javier Ávila Explains “The Trouble with His Name” at DEI Premiere Spotlight Event

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion held its premiere Spotlight Event on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Poet, novelist and professor Javier Ávila performed his celebrated one-man show, The Trouble with My Name, at both the Alexandria and Annandale campuses as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. The Trouble with My Name was a high-energy, engaging performance, that mixed poems and anecdotes detailing Professor Ávila’s life in Puerto Rico and Pennsylvania, his grandmother and parents, his experiences with racism and his relentless search for optimism and empathy.
