Six NOVA students were recognized by the Kimmy Duong Foundation (KDF) with scholarships at an awards ceremony on Saturday, August 21 in Reston. NOVA President Anne M. Kress and NOVA Foundation Executive Director Kelly Persons attended the ceremony, which celebrated 68 scholarship recipients from seven, local colleges and universities.

The KDF is in its 4th year of providing $1,000-$2,000 scholarships annually to students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership skills and service to their communities. Kimmy Duong started The Kimmy Duong Foundation to expand her philanthropic goals of helping people and the community.

The NOVA students who received scholarships for the 2021-22 academic year were: Khanh-An Huyen-Ton-Nu, Thu Nguyen, Yunataek Kim, Minh-Thu Le, Jennifer Pineda, and Steven Vu.

“One of the things that’s so compelling about the awards bestowed today is that this recognizes not just academic achievement, but service—service to community, service to individuals and service to culture,” said Dr. Kress.

The scholars were presented with a framed certificate and a medallion.

“I volunteered for more than 300 hours in social welfare facilities for people with severe disabilities. I really feel happy to be able to help other people,” said scholarship recipient, Yuntaek Kim.

Another NOVA scholar, Jennifer Pineda, noted, “As a single mother from Colombia, I feel blessed and very thankful for all the opportunities I have been given.”
