International Education Week at the Loudoun Campus: Nov. 15-19

The Loudoun Campus is pleased to be a part of the joint effort from the U.S. State Department, the Department of Education and NOVA to celebrate the benefits of international education. From Nov. 15 through 19, NOVA Loudoun will participate in this celebration with a series of both academic and cultural events organized by the Loudoun Campus International Education Committee.

The events scheduled that NOVA staff, faculty and students can participate in include:

Monday, Nov. 15

  • Library Displays that include the following topics: the geography of COVID, social media internationally, world currencies, democracy around the world, and the critical language scholarship program. The library displays will be in the Loudoun library and online. The displays will begin on November 15 and end Nov. 19.
  • Learn a Language – Farsi, 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.: Come by the LW building outside the art display on the first floor and learn a little Farsi.
  • The Geography of COVID, 3 p.m. until 5 p.m.: This session will focus on COVID contagious hearths in the world; travel restrictions and how mapping of contagion, death and vaccinations have become important This session will occur in the HEC Education Center Event Space, 2nd floor. Boxed sandwiches will be served.
  • World Cultures – Meet NOVA’s International Students, 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.: Meet NOVA’s international students at the Healthy Joe’s Cafe in the LC building. Learn about their cultures and countries. Boxed sandwiches will be provided.


Tuesday, Nov. 16

  • Learn a Language – Arabic, 11 a.m. until 12 p.m.: Come by the LW building outside the art display on the first floor and learn a little Arabic.
  • Chinese Calligraphy and Language, 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.: Come to the HEC Education Center Event Space, 2nd Floor and learn Chinese vocabulary through basic Chinese Calligraphy.
  • Film Showing of “They Call It Myanmar: Lifting the Curtain”: Info updated to reflect the fast-moving events in Myanmar happening as of Feb. 1, 2021. Register for the Zoom Link: https://bit.ly/MyanmarFilm.


Wednesday, Nov. 17

  • Learn a Language – Dari/Farsi, 12 p.m. until 1 p.m.: Come by the LW building outside the art display on the first floor and learn a little Dari/Farsi between 12:00-1:00pm.
  • Meditation Seminar/Demonstration, 3 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.: Learn the basics of meditation through a video and live demonstration at the HEC Education Center Event Space, 2nd Floor.
  • “Think Globally, Act Locally”- How Loudoun County is Preparing Students to Become Global Citizens, Future Leaders, and Lifelong Learners in a Diverse Society – featuring Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair, Phyllis Randall: This panel discussion will highlight the diversity of Loudoun County (and the Northern Virginia area), our educational institutions, and their roles in supporting students from diverse backgrounds (including international students) and addressing education equity.  The event will be held at the HEC Education Center Event Space, 2nd Floor. Thursday, Nov. 18

  • Should the United States Spread Democracy?, 2:20 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.: Students from the Global Links student group will give a brief presentation on the topic, then use the remainder of our time to debate the topic with debaters who have different viewpoints. There are a total of six debaters, along with Professor Smith as the moderator. This debate will occur at the HEC Education Center Event Space, 2nd Floor from 2:20-3:30pm.
