Time for Giving: Consider Organ Donation
December is a month where we often think of giving. One of NOVA’s adjunct faculty members had giving on her mind this holiday season as she offered to donate life to a family member. Dr. Sabrina B. Ricks, while juggling small business ownership and teaching classes, donated a kidney to her brother on Dec. 9. This was an act of love and heroism.
Ricks encourages others to consider donating the gift of life. As we are in a challenging world where negativity can seem to occupy our minds ahead of good news, there is still good news to share.
In more good news, Ricks’ brother received her kidney and it began working immediately. As a trivia fact, relatives are an exact kidney match only 25% of the time, including siblings. Ricks and her brother were a 100% match, which verified to Ricks that this was her purpose and the right thing to do. Both are in recovery but are healing well and expect to be back to their regular lives in the new year.
