A Recap of the President’s Activities

January 14, 2022 / General NOVA News

NOVA President Anne M. Kress regularly participates in critical events and activities to advocate for our students, the college and higher ed. in general. As we move into 2022, we want to begin sharing some of those activities.

Jan. 6: Appointed by US DoE to Represent All Community Colleges in Negotiated Rulemaking Sessions.
As we highlighted earlier this week, Dr. Kress has been selected by the U.S. Department of Education to represent all community colleges in this spring’s negotiated rulemaking sessions. These virtual sessions, week-long commitments spread across three months, will prepare proposed federal regulations on institutional and programmatic eligibility subject to oversight by the U.S. Department of Education. The negotiations will have significant impact on community colleges and NOVA’s students.

“As negotiators, we will review and reach consensus votes on proposed regulations related to central aspects of Title IV (federal financial aid) eligibility and implementation of the federal Higher Education Act,” Dr. Kress said. “I am honored to have been asked to play this role and look forward to the work.”

The mission and goal of the Negotiated Rulemaking Committee is to develop proposed student financial assistance regulations per Section 492 of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

Jan. 10: Meeting with Quantum Industry Coalition.
At a recent regional meeting, Dr. Kress was engaged in a conversation about the quantum computing industry. Quantum technology is the next big wave, and, while a career in quantum computing generally requires a Ph.D, Dr. Kress saw some promise for educational pathways for students interested In this field.

In the name of constant innovation to benefit our students and the region, she pulled in IET Provost Chad Knights, VP Steve Partridge and VPAA Eun-Woo Chang for an initial conversation, which Dr. Knights will spearhead going forward. They will work on an industry roundtable to discuss employer needs so we can help establish pathways.

It is conversations like these that lead to big things for our students. A few years ago, our partnership with Amazon Web Services on the cloud computing specialization was just a thought, and now it is a reality. There are so many possibilities and our president is willing to engage in the conversations to make those possibilities a reality.
