Today at 4: George Floyd’s Aunt, Cousin to Speak on Justice in Af.-American Community

February 3, 2022 / Events

Today, at 4 p.m., NOVA will welcome Angela Harrelson and Paris Stevens, the aunt and cousin of George Floyd. The two will discuss justice in the African-American community.

After the passing of his mother, Floyd moved to Minneapolis to be closer to his family and build a new life. An unmarried father of three, he wanted to escape the low-income Houston neighborhood where he grew up. Harrelson had promised her sister, George’s mother, that she would look after him. Before her nephew’s death, Harrelson felt people didn’t want to talk about racism; and now she seeks to change that. Ms. Stevens and Ms. Harrelson are the co-chairs of the George Floyd Global Memorial.

This important discussion will take place at the Regional Center for Workforce Education and Training on the Woodbridge Campus (Ballroom 160C). This event is funded by a grant from the Micron Foundation. It is free and open to all NOVA faculty, staff and students as well as the general public, but registration is required. The event will also be livestreamed and available to view for those unable to attend.

For more information, or if you need accommodations to attend, please contact the Office of DEI.
