Fitness – What Does It Mean to Live a Healthy Lifestyle? Fitness, more specifically, physical fitness is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as: The ability to function efficiently and effectively, to enjoy leisure, to be healthy, to resist disease, and to cope with emergency situations (Oxford University Press).

When thinking of this term, physical fitness, most people think of a muscular man or a skinny woman who eats healthy and exercises all the time. However, shouldn’t we look a little bit further for a better definition? Phrases like “to enjoy leisure” and “to resist disease” does not mean you have to stay away from tempting foods and workout 24/7. Enjoying the outdoors, fresh air and nature in a leisurely activity really represents the overall message of fitness. These types of leisurely activities will surely help people resist disease. There are many little things in life that can help fight away fitness related diseases.

In today’s world, physique may seem like the determining factor for whether or not a person is physically fit. However, a more important aspect to look at is how a person feels internally. Do you spend time outside in fun and leisurely activities? Are you making small changes to stay healthy and resist disease? Are you using quality, functional movements to lift or pick things up in your daily routine? These are more important questions to ask when we define this term “physical fitness.”
