16th Annual Chancellor’s Award: The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy was created in 2006 to honor leading philanthropists from Virginia’s 23 community colleges and the VFCCE. To date, nearly 400 individuals, foundations, and organizations have received this award for their contributions, which total more than $191 million for the growth and development of our community colleges and their respective educational foundations.

NOVA Recipient Rosalie Lesser: Rosalie has a deep passion for student success, a retired high school teacher who taught English and public speaking. As a young college student at Syracuse University, Rosalie received an annual scholarship of $300, which supported one-half of her tuition each year until she graduated. As a result, Rosalie was determined to establish the Rosalie and Monroe Lesser Scholarship as a way to pay her good fortune as a college student forward. The Lesser Endowment will provide renewable scholarships for NOVA students enrolled in an associate degree or non-credit program. She also crafted her scholarship criteria to ensure that our DACA students are encouraged to apply.

“We are tremendously grateful to Mrs. Rosalie Lesser for her generous and heartfelt gift to the NOVA Educational Foundation to establish the Rosalie and Monroe Lesser Endowed Scholarship,” said Dr. Anne M. Kress. “Rosalie is a champion for community college students, and her support of NOVA Nighthawks will help make their college dreams come true. Advocacy for our hard-working community college students runs in her remarkable family: her brother, philanthropist B. Mark Fried is a longtime VCCFE donor, and her nephew, Adam Fried, is an inspired contributor and advocate for Germanna. We are thankful to all for believing in our students!”
