Now Recruiting Business, Teacher Ed. Students for Work-Study Experiential Learning Opp.

August 29, 2022 / Our Nighthawks

NOVA’s Work-Study Program and Credit for Prior Learning Program recently partnered with several local non-profit organizations to offer students experiential learning opportunities. Participants will work at a local non-profit site, be paired with a faculty mentor and earn funds toward their educational expenses while acquiring valuable experience and soft skills.

There are currently about 20 job openings for business students who qualify for federal work-study awards for positions involving social media, digital marketing, finance, office coordination and communications with the following non-profit organizations:

Business students who are hired for these positions will be paid $15 to $16 per hour through NOVA’s Federal Work-Study program and may work up to 20 hours per week.  They will also receive a stipend to assist with the cost of professional attire, technology and transportation with funds from a Radical InNOVAtion Grant. Students in these positions will take a one-credit course (paid for by the Radical InNOVAtion Grant) where they will learn how to create a portfolio that documents their work-based learning experience. After working at least 240 hours in these positions, they can submit their portfolio to NOVA’s Credit for Prior Learning Program and potentially earn at least three credits for courses such as BUS-270 or BUS-290.

At least 10 additional openings are available with Prince William County Public Schools for federal work-study students interested in working as an Elementary School Teacher Assistant. These positions are perfect for students pursuing degrees in social sciences: teacher education specialization or early childhood development. After working at least 240 hours, students in these positions may potentially earn college credit for EDU-290 through NOVA’s Credit for Prior Learning Program.

Partnerships were also established with the Insight Memory Care Center and the Asian-Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project.  Positions with these two organizations are not eligible for college credit at this time, but these positions are open to all students who qualify for federal work-study awards.  Program Assistants, Public Benefit Enrollment/Survivor Services Program Interns and a Graphic Design/Outreach Intern are being recruited for these non-profit partners.

Please encourage students to apply for these new opportunities!  Students who were offered a 2022-2023 Federal Work-Study award on their NOVAConnect account under View Financial Aid may apply for these positions here by clicking on “Local Non-Profit Organization Jobs” and following the prompts. Students who are interested in these positions, but who do not have an offered work-study award should contact their Campus Work-Study Coordinator to see if they qualify.

Questions about work-study positions may be directed to College Work-Study Coordinator Clint Young, jcyoung@nvcc.edu. Questions related to earning college credit for experiential learning may be sent to NOVA’s Credit for Prior Learning Coordinator Dr. Shawn Addison, saddison@nvcc.edu. Dr. Cathleen Cogdill and Dr. Dahlia Henry-Tett are also involved with spearheading this new initiative and assisted with securing a Radical InNOVAtion Grant for this project.
