DEI Workshop #1. Pause: Using Mindfulness to Investigate our Norms and Habits, Friday at 11 a.m.

August 31, 2022 / Events

Open seats still remain for the DEI grant-supported workshop, “Pause: Using Mindfulness to Investigate our Norms and Habits.”

When we pause, we create space to respond with intention. When we pause, we create opportunities to explore why we think, feel and act the way we do. When we act without pause, we lean on our habits and unconscious cultural conditioning, which may not allow us to meet others, or ourselves, with as much openness or empathy as we might hope.

This workshop is built upon the idea that practicing mindful awareness is the first step to understanding how our own way of being impacts our ability to realize our personal goals related to diversity, equity and inclusion work. Together, participants will:

  • define mindfulness and mindfulness practice;

  • learn techniques for pausing in the midst of difficult moments;

  • identify mindfulness tools useful in investigating their own ways of being and

  • articulate ways culture shapes individuals.

This workshop is supported by the NOVA Foundation and the office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion via a DEI InNOVAtion Grant. It will be held on Friday, September 2, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Room CM-332 on the Annandale Campus. A vegetarian boxed lunch will be provided for all participants.
