Introduction to Non-Violent Communication Workshop, Oct. 14 at 11
Many of the workshops we offer are grounded in the principles of Non-Violent Communication, or NVC. For us, not only is NVC a guiding framework for communication in the workspace, it also represents a course of study that we gain much from when we take it on as a practice in our personal lives. Moreover, when practiced, it tends to become more than a simple tool that we can rely on for clear communication. It also benefits us to become more in tune with others as we interact with those around us in all facets of life. Thus, it becomes a practice of compassionate communication and empathy.

COMPASSION 102 – Non-Violent Communication in Theory and Practice, Friday, October 14, 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., Annandale Campus CM-332
We have all had interactions where we feel like we were seen and heard, and we all have had interactions where it seems like we weren’t! What is it about the ones that leave us satisfied that cause them to be so; and what is it about the others that could have been done differently?
How might the ways we communicate predispose what we take from our interactions? How might the very language we use, even in how we think about our interactions, shape how we see our world?
The “Compassionate Communication” workshop asks how might we re-envision our shared spaces through compassionate communication.
Together we’ll ask what it means to bring a compassionate lens to our communication with others and, more importantly, with ourselves. Join us to explore these questions!
May we discover that, although compassionate communication doesn’t always mean we get what we want, when effective, it can unlock the possibility of novel and creative solutions that we might not have even thought of!
Spoiler Alert: It can work equally well both at work and at home. It can even include the use of the word, “no!” True compassionate communication can be used in so many situations, including those in which the other person in the conversation is NOT communicating compassionately. With a little practice, compassionate communication can become the default mode that we incorporate into our lives.
- All attendees will be asked to commit to attending the full duration of the event, and to practice to the level of their comfort.
- Experiences in both mindfulness meditation and non-violent communication will be offered.
- Attendees will be provided with a vegetarian boxed lunch and refreshments, including tea.
