NOVA Libraries: Celebrate Hispanic Heritage

October 13, 2022 / General NOVA News

Although National Hispanic Heritage Month is coming to a close this week, there’s still time to celebrate, and NOVA Libraries can help!

NOVA Libraries has many wonderful fiction books written by Hispanic authors, including both new and popular authors as well as timeless classics. Titles like Julia Alvarez’s How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (print, ebook) and Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street (print, ebook) are long-time favorites from notable Hispanic authors, but we also have a number of recent bestsellers from writers like Zoraida Córdova (The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina [print, ebook]), Carmen Maria Machado (Her Body and Other Parties), and Silvia Moreno-Garcia (The Daughter of Doctor Moreau). We hope you’ll give them a read!

If you’re not a fan of fiction, don’t despair! We’ve got plenty of books for nonfiction readers as well. If you like memoirs, you might check out John Paul Brammer’s ¡Hola Papi!: How to Come out in a Walmart Parking Lot and Other Life Lessons or Carmen Maria Machado’s In the Dream House. History readers might enjoy titles like Our America: A Hispanic History of the United States and El Norte: The Epic and Forgotten Story of Hispanic North America (print, ebook). You can even learn about the contributions of Hispanic and Latino people in Virginia from Christine Stoddard’s Hispanic & Latino Heritage in Virginia (print, ebook).

If you’re not looking to pick up a book for Hispanic Heritage Month, why not try watching a film instead! Our Video Streaming Collections include a wide variety of films, so whether you’re a documentary enthusiast or you’d prefer to watch one of our fun feature films, NOVA Libraries has something for you, with films for the whole family, like Book of Life and Encanto, or documentary films, like The Latino Americans and Letters to Eloisa.

If none of these recommendations seem right for you, there’s more where that came from! Library staff at multiple campus libraries have compiled selections of their favorite Hispanic Heritage Month titles in informative displays you can find in the libraries. The displays pictured here were created by Supie Wolf (AN), Ann Emerson (LO), Shawna Guidry (MA), Molly Anderson (WO), and Kerry Cotter (WO). Additionally, Stacy Arth (AN) built this Celebrating Hispanic Heritage LibGuide, which provides links to books, films, podcasts, music, artists, and other resources that are relevant to Hispanic Heritage Month.

If, after all this, you’re still not seeing anything you like, don’t lose hope! You can always ask one of your friendly librarians. Stop by any of the NOVA Libraries, and we’ll help you track down something that meets your needs!
