NOVA Libraries Feature Film Friday: The Fall
NOVA Libraries’ Feature Film Friday is a series highlighting films that are available to the campus community through our Video Streaming Collections. Each Friday, we feature a different film being used by faculty to support College programming and coursework. All of the content in our Video Streaming Collections is available for free to everyone in the NOVA community and can be accessed from anywhere. To learn more about these collections and how you can include streaming video in your courses, check out this Streaming Video Guide.
This week we are highlighting Professor Kate Keeney (LO) and their use of The Fall in CST 151: Film Appreciation I. Professor Keeney describes The Fall as a labor of love, specifically director Tarsem Singh’s love of film and storytelling. Recuperating in an early 1900’s hospital, stuntman Roy (Lee Pace) tells a story of drama, romance and adventure to fellow patient, six-year-old Alexandria. What the audience sees is Alexandria’s fantastical imagining of the tale, full of vivid color, stunning landscapes and luscious costumes. Professor Keeney is teaching this film at NOVA for the first time this semester and has shared a bit about how they hope their class experiences the film.
“This is a great film to begin our class with because its entire purpose is to celebrate what you can do with the medium. The film opens with a black and white sequence meant to mimic a silent-era film, includes a stop-motion animation and was filmed entirely without computer generated effects, leading to a film that is meant to be appreciated like a piece of art. I’ve found that everyone who watches the film comes away with at least one image that they love, and I hope my class uses the film as a chance to get excited about the possibilities of film and filmmaking.”
This week’s film is available for streaming through Swank Digital Campus, a platform that NOVA Libraries uses to purchase individual titles for classroom use. Although these films are primarily used for coursework, they can also be watched outside of class for fun, which we hope you’ll do with our featured films each week! Requests for Swank films are made during the spring semester, which is our annual Swank Request Period. For more information, contact Melanie Medina or Molly Anderson. If you’re already using a film from our video streaming collection in your course and want to be featured on a future Feature Friday, please fill out this survey. Otherwise, keep an eye on the Daily Flyer to see what we spotlight next!
Watch The Fall on the Swank platform until September 2023.
