DEI on the Inside Workshop #3: Discovery, Nov. 4

October 31, 2022 / Events

Registration is open for the third “DEI on the Inside” workshop, titled, “Discovery – Exploring Emergent Habits and Needs in the Workscape.” In this workshop, we ask the question, “What does it mean to courageously commit ourselves to the practice of discovery?”

This workshop will be held on Friday, November 4, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the Annandale Campus (in CM-332).

To contribute to a culture that is welcoming to all in our community, we must become curious and open to those around us, where they are and as they are. Many of us in higher education are skilled at inquiry, so we might feel comfortable asking specific research questions and opening ourselves up to the related answer. Discovery, in this context, however, asks something different. It asks that we expand the scope of what we’re willing to explore and meet “new-to-us” terrain without set expectations or preconceived ideas of what ought to be. It is less about judgment and more about acceptance.

In this workshop, we will use the framework of Nonviolent Communication as a toolkit to guide the discovery process as it unfolds within ourselves, our environment, and those around us with whom we interact. Participants will be invited to:

  • Identify the two parts and four steps of Nonviolent Communication;
  • Describe the relationship between feelings and needs;
  • Distinguish I-I and U-U statements from I-U and U-I statements;
  • Notice and acknowledge patterns of judgment; and
  • Practice curiosity in dialogue with others.

This workshop is supported by the NOVA Foundation and the office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion via a DEI InNOVAtion Grant. A vegetarian boxed lunch will be provided to all participants.
