Gilman Scholar, NOVA Staff Attend German Ambassador’s Reception
On Tuesday, November 16, German Ambassador, Emily Haber, in partnership with Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs, Lee Satterfield, held a reception at the German Ambassador’s Residence on the occasion of the signing of the German-U.S. Joint Declaration of Intent, in support of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. NOVA has been a longstanding supporter and partner of the Gilman Scholarship Program, a U.S. Department of State program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. In the past two years alone, five NOVA students received the prestigious scholarship with interest rapidly increasing. NOVA has also consistently served on biannual Gilman scholarship review committees.
The event included former Gilman recipients who studied abroad in Germany. Among them was NOVA’s own Manuel Santiago, who finished his internship abroad in Berlin in summer 2022. NOVA’s Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Barbara Hopkins, and Associate Director for International Education and Sponsored Programs, Leeza Fernand, were in attendance to support the partnership, the Gilman Scholarship and NOVA’s commitment to international education.
