A “Fur-ever” Home for the Holidays
For the last three decades, NOVA’s Veterinary Technology Department has partnered exclusively with the Frederick County Esther Boyd Animal Shelter in Winchester, Va., to provide all necessary medical care, including surgical procedures, for animals in need of a “fur-ever” home. Though some of the animals who receive treatment have an adoption pending, most are still in search of an amazing human to love. The Veterinary Technology Department experiences such joy whenever an animal we serve finds their new family, and we’re so excited to share a success story that happened within the NOVA community!
Recently an 8-week-old kitten named Sir Mousetails came to our Loudoun Campus Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Right away he captured our hearts with his affectionate purring, sweet snuggling and playful personality (he loves to climb on top of shoulders!). However, he faced a number of hurdles to adoption, including a broken tail in need of surgery. Thanks to the hard work and care of our faculty veterinarians, instructional LVTs and program staff and students, not only did his tail get fixed, but Sir Mousetails was also microchipped and vaccinated—all he was missing was a family.
As luck would have it, Loudoun Campus Officer Sara and her daughter, Nila, had been looking for a kitten for the last year. When Officer Sara crossed paths with Sir Mousetails, it was love at first sight—he “purr-fectly” matched her feline friend wish list. Last Friday, Officer Sara and Nila (wearing a cat dress in honor of the occasion) brought Sir Mousetails home to be part of their “fur-ever” home. Nila, who just recently celebrated her birthday, couldn’t wait to shower her new kitten with all the presents and toys she picked out especially for him. Sara also gave their kitten the gift of a new name: Pashmak, which is Persian for “cotton candy” and a delightful tribute to his soft fur.
The Veterinary Technology Department considers it such an honor to be a part of special stories such as this, and we’re so thrilled for Officer Sara, Nila and Pashmak!
