Final “DEI on the Inside” Workshop: Empathy, Dec. 2

November 29, 2022 / Events

Registration is open for the final of our fall 2022 DEI grant-supported workshops, “Empathy: Embracing Ways of Being that Include Awareness of All.” This workshop will be held Friday, December 2, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in CM-332 on the Annandale Campus. All are welcome to register and attend!

What does it mean to feel with others? What does it mean to meet yourself with compassion when you face intense emotion? Practicing empathy with yourself and those around you can have a profound impact on how diverse needs can be navigated.

This workshop will explore ways we can meet one another with empathy while noticing and suspending our patterns of judgment. It will allow space to practice reframing of how we might observe or diagnose the behaviors of others and offer strategies for seeing others through the lens of their feelings and needs. Participants in this workshop will be able to:

  • Practice observing situations based upon the nonviolent communication framework;
  • Describe the metta meditation practice;
  • Articulate common phrases used in metta meditation;
  • Identify patterns of dualistic thinking; and
  • Practice ways of re-framing limiting cultural norms.

This workshop is supported by the NOVA Foundation and the office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion via a DEI InNOVAtion Grant, and as always, a vegetarian boxed lunch will be provided for all participants. Click here to register for the event.

If you need accommodations to participate, send requests for accommodation to one of the hosts, Paul Fitzgerald or Cheri Lemieux Spiegel. If you want to stay up to date on all the workshops and opportunities offered by the Annandale Center for Contemplative Practice, please join the Canvas site here.
