Update on NOVA’s Advising Redesign Efforts

December 12, 2022 / General NOVA News

Under the leadership of Dr. Michelle Brown-Nevers, vice president for enrollment management and student success, the Advising Redesign Committee is working diligently to ensure our advising model is comprehensive and student centered.

As the advising redesign progresses, there will be a series of updates in the Daily Flyer. Common among these updates are the following tenets: NOVA will be implementing a team-based approach for advising; Teams will be grouped by academic pathways; Teams will be made up of advisors, counselors, teaching faculty, one or more members of Student Services/Student Success staff, Workforce, and other areas; and Advisors will be the primary point of contact for the student.

The focus of this update is the Expectations of Advising Teams.

The subgroup established expectations of advising team interactions based on best practices and higher education research. These overarching expectations include:

  • NACADA Core Competencies serving as the foundation for advising training and practice
  • Use of all available resources to provide students with the most accurate, up-to-date information on academic programs/disciplines and transfer, academic and non-academic support services, as well as college policies and procedures.
  • Navigate serving as the primary source to document advising interactions, encourage and evaluate academic planning, track academic progress, refer support services (academic and non-academic), and nudge students to complete important milestones and/or tasks.
  • Establishing methods of accountability to ensure effectiveness. For example, using reporting and analytic features in Navigate to assess progress and outcomes.

More information regarding how to utilize features in Navigate will be shared in upcoming Daily Flyer installments.
