Advising Redesign Subgroup Updates December 2022

December 13, 2022 / Faculty/Staff Highlights

As you have likely heard, the Advising Redesign Committee has been working diligently to ensure NOVA’s advising model is comprehensive and student centered.

As the advising redesign progresses, there will be a series of updates to keep you apprised of the process. Common among these updates are the following tenets:

  • NOVA will be implementing a team-based approach for advising;
  • Teams will be grouped by academic pathways;
  • Teams will be made up of advisors, counselors, teaching faculty, one or more members of Student Services/Student Success staff, Workforce and other areas; and
  • Advisors will be the primary point of contact for the student.

Advising 100/101/200/201 Subgroup
The subgroup is charged with creating group opportunities for students moving from entry to progression via the Advising 100, 101 and 200 virtual advising sessions.

The team is developing alerts and campaigns in Navigate that would notify students about upcoming Advising 100, 101, and 200 sessions. The session information and links will also be made available via the Advising, New2NOVA, and Virtual Lobby spaces.

Advising 101 sessions for continuing students began February 2022 and again in October and November 2022. Advising 100 sessions for entering students began May 2022.  At the end of November 2022, 106 sessions of 100 and 101s will have been offered and completed, serving over 3500 students. We are using lessons learned in the Entry and Progression programming to begin to create the Advising 200 sessions.

Advising Calendar Subgroup
The purpose of the Advising Calendar subgroup is to increase transparency and awareness of advising related events and activities throughout the year. The Advising Calendar Subgroup has been tracking current events each month that may impact institutional decision-making, resource allocation, student processes, and service delivery. The events are being documented on a spreadsheet to include dates, times, purpose of event, target audience, and the event sponsor as a point of contact. Subgroup members were asked to populate the spreadsheet with the activities/events, and the calendar cycles [seasons] for when these activities/events occur.  The group is working to answer the following questions:  Who reviews or gives approval for an event? How are events promoted?  What are the protocols for requesting support from other departments?
