How to Help Students Who Missed Payment Deadline

January 6, 2023 / Our Nighthawks

The payment deadline for spring 2023 classes was Tuesday, January 3. You may hear from students who missed this deadline and are now wondering what’s happening with their classes. What they’ve heard from us is that they may be dropped from their classes if they miss the deadline.

To secure their schedule for spring, students would have needed to do one of the following:

  • have enough financial aid (e.g., grants and scholarships) pending on their account to fully cover tuition
  • sign up for a NOVA payment plan to cover any remaining balance
  • use Veteran benefits or a third-party contract or
  • pay their tuition

How can you help students who are wondering what’s next?

  • Urge students to check their financial aid balance
Many students will have received financial aid, so their question will likely be whether they have enough aid pending on their account to have held their classes. Please feel free to direct them to this financial aid tutorial, which walks them through the process of comparing anticipated aid with tuition balance: Does Financial Aid Cover My Balance? on the College’s website.
  • Remind students to check their schedule for dropped classes AND unwanted classes on Monday, Jan. 9
Remind them to check the accuracy of their schedule on Monday, Jan. 9. If, on that date, they’ve been dropped from any classes, they’ll want to try to re-enroll as soon as possible.
  • Finally, students are being told that the 3rd was the only automatic/automated drop date for this semester. If, on the 9th, they see any courses in their enrollment that they don’t want to take, they’re responsible for dropping those courses themselves by the census date. If they don’t, they’ll be responsible for those tuition charges and may be prevented from registering in the future. For more information on the Census Date, see the Academic Calendar for Spring 2023.

If students have further questions, please know that the financial aid, business and student services offices are open and ready to help.
