NOVA Saddened by Passing of Former Board Member Bruce Neilson

January 13, 2023 / Faculty/Staff Highlights

On Saturday, December 17, 2022, Bruce Neilson, a former member of our College Board, passed peacefully at the age of 70.

Bruce served on the board from 2011 to 2019 as one of Fairfax County’s representatives and for several years was the chair of our Finance, Building and Sites Committee.

He was an active volunteer for 20 years with Social Action Linking Together (SALT), realizing legislative achievements in prison reform, increases in the minimum wage, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) grants and homelessness prevention.

Bruce also served on the board of the Northern Virginia Literacy Council, the Alliance for Human Services and several other nonprofit organizations. Finally, he served as treasurer for Senate Majority Leader Richard Saslaw and several nonprofit organizations.

Bruce leaves behind an admirable legacy of service, to NOVA and the broader community, and we will remember him fondly.
