OEMS Trains 14 New NOVA Lifesavers! More Trainings On the Way
The Office of Emergency Management and Safety (OEMS) hosted the latest American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR and American College of Surgeons Stop the Bleed class this past Tuesday at the OEMS Manassas Training Center (Howsmon Hall, MH-223).
Fourteen of your colleagues from across the College are better equipped to help in an emergency after taking time to learn how to save a life during a cardiac event or traumatic incident. The class was presented by OEMS staff instructors who taught CPR, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use, wound packing and tourniquet use. Colleagues received instruction on adult, pediatric and infant lifesaving techniques including breathing for a person who has stopped breathing, uncontrolled bleeding and providing cardiac care until first responders arrive.
OEMS recommends you “get involved” in learning to save a life and we encourage everyone to be prepared for incidents at home, in the car and at NOVA. Thank you to the 14 colleagues who attended Tuesday’s class and for making the effort to be prepared.
OEMS will be offering several upcoming classes and we encourage you to sign up for the classes they are interested in attending. Please obtain permission from your supervisor prior to emailing for registration. Classes for the next several months are listed below, with a brief description of each. All will be held at our new Manassas Training Center and all begin at 8 a.m. Please email OEM@NVCC.edu to register for your selection.
- March 10, 17, 24 – College Community Emergency Response Team – In C-CERT, students will engage in hands-on training for disaster response, first aid, triage, fire control, building collapse rescue, search and rescue, terrorism and disaster psychology.
- March 14 – Tactical Emergency Casualty Care, Active Bystander — Students will engage in advanced care for survivors of active violence events such as active shooter, multi-vehicle car accidents and other trauma-related events. This engaging 8-hour class brings the news of today to the classroom and gives students the confidence to act when an incident occurs. A case-study on why some people survive traumatic events and why some do not is included as well. Active-violence events are not just a recent development in society. This class will help participants prepare and respond.
- April 18 – American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR/American College of Surgeons Stop the Bleed — This 8-hour class provides the lifesaving skills to effectively deal with cardiac events, provide care and help sustain a person’s life until help arrives. Participants will learn the use of Heartsaver CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The class includes instruction on slowing or stopping severe bleeding after an accident or traumatic event (active shooter, car accident, etc.).
Keep an eye on the Daily Flyer as OEMS is currently scheduling classes for May, June and July and will announce those classes in the Flyer soon!
