Celebrate Frederick Douglass Day 2023 at NOVA, Feb. 14

February 13, 2023 / Events

The Alexandria Campus Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee invites all of NOVA to join them in celebrating Douglass Day 2023! February 14 marks the unofficial birthday of Frederick Douglass with a crowdsourced transcribe-a-thon. This year, volunteers will transcribe the papers of Mary Ann Shadd Cary, a nineteenth century educator, newspaper publisher and lawyer.

The transcribe-a-thon is a great extra credit activity for students that introduces them to Black history archives while they perform a much-needed service. Participating is as easy as signing on to the official website and getting started. The Douglass Day resource page on YouTube posts instructions and videos of past years’ celebrations (and a link to a great Spotify playlist!).

The Alexandria DEI Committee has a few Douglass Day stickers to share with participants at other campuses. Please contact Susan Monroe (smonroe@nvcc.edu) or Laura Garcia-Moreyra (lgarciamoreyra1@nvcc.edu) for more information.
