NOVA Wishes a Fond Farewell to AVP Cory Thompson

March 1, 2023 / Faculty/Staff Highlights

Please join me in sending a fond farewell to Associate Vice President of Administrative Services Cory Thompson! Cory has accepted a position at our sister school, Laurel Ridge Community College, to become their new vice president of finance & administration. His last day at NOVA will be March 9.

Cory began his career at NOVA in 2003 as a Business Office cashier. He quickly advanced through various roles at the College, including as Woodbridge business manager, director of parking services and director of auxiliary services before assuming his current role in 2018.

Cory’s leadership has been important to the College and to the Finance and Administrative Services Division. Here are just a few noteworthy accomplishments during his tenure:

  • Created the building blocks of an innovative and equitable environment for Parking and Transportation Services.
  • During the transition to the Shared Services Center (SSC), Cory spearheaded the inception of routine customer service calls between SSC and NOVA to ensure procurement challenges were addressed and open issues discussed. These calls were so successful that SSC began to replicate this system for the rest of the colleges within the VCCS.
  • He served as the College’s lead for implementing COVID-19 safety controls and response plans, including development of the Return to NOVA plans that were submitted to the Governor of Virginia and SCHEV; procuring PPE for distribution throughout the campuses and improving wifi at our parking lots for student, faculty and staff use.
  • Through Cory’s leadership, NOVA was able to secure a $6.3M reduction in rent at our Pender administrative facility.

Please join us on March 7 at the Brault Building, Room 321 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. to wish Cory farewell and thank him for his outstanding contributions at NOVA. We wish him the best of luck as he embarks on this new chapter!
