Student Support Proposal Update

March 23, 2023 / General NOVA News

Last fall, President Kress charged the provosts; Dr. Brown-Nevers, former VPEMSS, and AVP of HR, Charlotte Calobrisi to examine NOVA’s advisor and counselor roles and to provide a set of recommendations. This group added additional members and worked throughout the fall and submitted a Student Support Roles Proposal in December 2022. The full proposal and Dr. Kress’ responses to it can both be found on NOVAnet at the Office of the President – Recommendations and Responses – All Documents. This proposal has already been shared with those directly impacted in discussions and a town hall. The entire College community should also be aware of some of the key recommendations from this proposal:

  1. NOVA should move to three types of student support positions:
    • counselors (only for Behavioral Health and Accommodations/Accessibility),
    • coaches (for transfer, career, and academic success), and
    • academic advisors
  2. NOVA should re-envision who can teach SDV (student development courses). Specifically, NOVA should allow faculty and staff with a bachelor’s degree or higher to teach SDV. Additionally, NOVA should modify its NOVA Classified Staff Teaching Credit Course Policy to allow classified staff to teach during the day
  3. NOVA should adopt a career progression ladder for advisors

For more on this proposal, as well as additional recommendations, please refer to the full report on the President’s NOVAnet page. Subsequent to President Kress’ response (also available on SharePoint), work has begun to implement these recommendations.

If you have questions about any part of this student support proposal, please contact any campus provost or Dr. Beatrice McKeithen, acting VPEMSS.
