Submit Your Haiku by April 20
April is both National Poetry and National Community College Month, so as regular readers know, this convergence can only mean one thing: a call for haiku!
As a reminder, haiku is a traditional Japanese poetic form with three lines. In English, the haiku convention for these lines is typically 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables. The lines do not usually rhyme. Your haiku should follow this form.
The rules:
- Your haiku should celebrate some aspect of community colleges or community college students. It can be NOVA-centric or more broadly about community colleges—it’s completely up to you.
- You can enter as many haiku as you wish, but your name will be entered into the drawing (see below) just once.
- Your deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 20.
- Send your entry to me at PresidentsOffice@nvcc.edu
I’ll select the five writers at random: each will receive a $25 donation made in their name to NOVA’s Day of Giving (not-so-coincidentally April 20) and an invitation to a group lunch, hosted by me.
As before, I will compile and publish all entries, meaning that you will have some great poems to read this spring, but if you do not want your entry published, please let me know.
Thank you for the creativity you bring to all you do!
