Full-time, part-time/adjunct and dual enrollment English-111 faculty have the opportunity to start the summer right by participating in the Writing Ourselves In QEP institutes. Learn from the best and leave with several redesigned assignments for use in your English classes. In-person on the Woodbridge Campus
The Writing Ourselves In QEP Summer Institute is an interactive three-and-a-half day institute open to all part-time/adjunct, dual-enrollment and full-time ENG-111 instructors at NOVA.
This year, the summer institute will open the afternoon of Tuesday, August 8 with a keynote address by Dr. Terrell Strayhorn. Open to all NOVA and area high school English instructors, Tuesday attendees will enjoy a keynote on how to develop our students’ sense of belonging. Following the keynote, participants will transition into an interactive workshop focused on aligning goals for teaching writing in the high school as well as at NOVA. Light refreshments will be provided.
The 2023 featured summer institute speaker is Dr. April Baker-Bell. Summer institute attendees will engage in an interactive keynote and workshop on culturally responsive, antiracist pedagogy. Participants will leave with a virtual workbook toolkit and concrete actionable ideas to incorporate in their teaching.
Participants will learn about Transparent Assignment Design, Problem-Based Learning, and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy. The 2023 summer institute will be held on the Woodbridge Campus. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. Participants will leave the institute with several redesigned assignments to use in their ENG 111 classes that align with both the new ENG 111 course content and the QEP goals. Part-time and full-time teaching faculty will receive compensation of $300 for completing the Institute.
Dates and Times: Tuesday, August 8, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday, August 9 through 11, 8.30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Asynchronous Institute (Space is limited)
The Writing Ourselves In QEP Asynchronous Institute is an interactive 5-week, cohort-based online institute that is open to all part-time/adjunct, dual-enrollment and full-time ENG-111 instructors at NOVA. Participants will learn about transparent assignment design, problem-based learning and culturally responsive pedagogy and leave with several redesigned assignments for use in their ENG-111 course. Part-time and full-time teaching faculty will receive compensation of $300 for completing the Institute.
Dates: May 16 through June 18.
Location: Fully online via Canvas
