Manassas’ Math Faculty Member, Stellar Alum Present at Int’l Math Conference in Denver
Matthew Westerhoff, a math faculty member at NOVA’s Manassas Campus, and his former honors student Justin Cox gave a presentation at the Pearson-sponsored International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics (ICTCM 2023) in Denver, Colorado.
The presentation covered a variety of features of Maple software, ranging from basic to intermediate levels, and showcased how the software can be effectively used in teaching calculus. The presentation was specifically aimed at instructors who incorporate technology into their calculus curriculum and would benefit from learning about these features. In the latter part of the presentation, Cox presented his Calculus 1 honors research project comparing numerical techniques for solving the average magnetic field strength of a dipole antenna.
Currently a graduate student at George Mason University, Cox is interested in combinatorial algebraic geometry and serves as the lead math tutor at the NOVA Manassas Campus math tutoring center.
