May 8, 2023 / General NOVA News

Does Chat GPT violate NOVA’s Student Code of Conduct? Maybe! In most cases, the answer is ‘yes’, it is a violation of the code of conduct. If you, as the professor, did not permit your students to use Chat GPT or any other AI-based language model tool, please complete an Academic Integrity Report Form.

Using Chat GPT could violate the code of conduct in the following ways:

  • Plagiarism
  • Cheating
  • Unauthorized use of an electronic device
  • Failure to comply with the directions of a NOVA official

How can you know if a student is using AI technology to complete assignments? Turnitin.com recently created an AI detection tool to help professors determine whether a student used AI to complete an assignment. Turnitin believes that its AI detection tool is 98% accurate. You can watch this video to learn how you can use the AI detection tool in Canvas.

If you have questions concerning the student code of conduct, please reach out to your campus Coordinator For Student Integrity and Conduct:
