NOVA’s Night of Science and the Arts!
NOVA’s Night of Science and the Arts! was held on May 11 at the Annandale Campus. Over 250 kids and their parents were treated to an unparalleled night of experiential learning. Modules included an instrument petting zoo sponsored by Foxes Music Company, putting together skeletons, learning your blood type, making a microbial handprint, examining the interactions between antibody and antigen, math magic, the camera obscura, evolution of a musical instrument, extracting DNA from strawberries, physics modules from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, rocket car races, exploding balloons with lasers, exploding gummy bears, separating mixtures, making precipitates, reacting metals, touching rocks and minerals, the Geologic time scale, cow heart dissections, making brain hats, learning about the lungs, coding and robotics sponsored by NOVA SySTEMics, and even viewing cadavers via the Anatomage table.
Faculty, staff, and students all had a blast with the kids and their parents. According to one parent, “It’s so great for the kids and gives a great view of what NOVA has to offer.”
“The presenters were so engaging, and the experiments were informative and well-tailored to the audience,” said another parent. “Our kids loved the event and will definitely come to any future Science Nights!”
Funding for the event was provided by the Provost Diane Mucci’s office.
