Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Project Planning Workshop, May 31

May 30, 2023 / Events

You tried a new pedagogical approach or curricular innovation and it seemed to work! If you had studied the impact of that teaching change on your students’ learning, you would have been engaging in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), which invites you to examine your classroom practices systematically, improve your teaching based on your findings and then share your findings with others.

Join us for a three-hour working session to plan a SoTL study on a topic that interests you! This session, hosted by the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning at George Mason University, will be held Wednesday, May 31 from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m., either in person at George Mason or virtually via Zoom.

Following a brief introduction to SoTL and review of IRB expectations for design of human subjects research, attendees will brainstorm potential research questions and methods, draft plans, get feedback from fellow participants and potentially find collaborators interested in the same topic. Facilitators will also be available throughout to individually consult on both SoTL study design, overall, as well as on details of the IRB application process. Participants are encouraged to come with a partner or team (faculty and instructors, graduate students and/or undergraduate students) to collaborate on their study, but they may also come as solo scholars looking to meet possible research collaborators.

Afternoon snacks will be provided for in-person attendees, and all participants will receive a copy of Nancy Chick’s SoTL in Action. The number of books is limited, so please register early!

Please register for the workshop and send any questions to Breana Bayraktar (bbayrakt@gmu.edu), blended learning/hybrid pedagogy specialist, Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning, George Mason University.
