An Overview of Academic Integrity
To better familiarize faculty and staff with the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, we have been running a series of articles on what it is we do, how and why. This week, we are giving an overview of Academic Integrity, which is defined in NOVA Policy 224 and applies to all students:
What does it say?
The policy statement outlines the following:
“When College officials award credits, degrees and certificates, they must assume the absolute integrity of the work students have done; therefore, students must maintain the highest standard of honor in their scholastic work.
The College does not tolerate academic dishonesty. Along with any grade penalty the instructor imposes, if the student is found responsible for violating the Academic Integrity Policy, the student may also face disciplinary action for violating the Student Code of Conduct. Students suspected of violating this policy shall be addressed under the provisions of this policy.”
Academic dishonesty can include but is not limited to:
- Cheating
- Facilitating academic dishonesty
- Plagiarism
- Other forms of academic dishonesty
Please reference NVCC policy 224 to access the definitions, in-depth details, and examples of what constitutes academic dishonesty. The policy will outline minor, moderate, and major violations of academic integrity that can be reported by faculty, testing center staff, and academic support personnel. Every violation of academic integrity must be entered using the Student Integrity and Conduct report. The following is a link to this report: Student Integrity and Conduct – Northern Virginia Community College.
