Key Findings in the New Fact Book at NOVA
The 36th edition of the NOVA Fact Book: 2018-2019 through 2022-2023 is now available for your reference. Some of the key insights from the fact book are summarized below.
- While headcount enrollment for AY 2022-23 increased by about 3% compared to AY 2021-22 (with about a 5% increase, fall over fall), FTES enrollment decreased slightly by 1% for the academic year.
- Our program-placed student populations were declining consistently in the five-year period for AA, AAA and AS degrees while AFA and AAS degrees, and our certificate populations were increasing. The overall number of program-placed students for associate degrees and certificates decreased 16% for five years from 38,541 in fall 2018 to 32,292 in fall 2022. See the table below for details.

- The median and mean age of our overall student population has gone down. The proportion of our adult population (age 25 and above) decreased 8.1 percentage points from 28.6% to 20.5% in the past five fall semesters. Dr. Kress’ plan to increase the adult student population will hopefully change the trend.

- Both our first-time, full-time, program-placed student and our first-time, part-time, program-placed student fall 2021 to fall 2022 retention increased from 70.5% to 72.6% (a 2.1 percentage point increase for full time), and from 52.7% to 53.4% (a 0.7 percentage points increase for part time), respectively compared to last year (fall 2020 to fall 2021 retention rates).
- Our most recent college-wide full-time student graduation rate increased 3.6 percentage points ( for the fall 2018 cohort compared to of the fall 2017 cohort). The part-time graduation rate increased 1 percentage point for the same period.
- Not surprisingly, our international student population had decreased from 1,603 in fall 2018 to 646 in fall 2022 (including non-credit students), an almost 60% decrease over the previous five years.
- Our contract dual enrollment population consistently increased from 10,803 in AY 2018-19 to 16,768 in AY 2022-23, a 55.2% increase over five years, while the dual enrollment conversion rate declined from 13.2% to 9.1% during the same period.
Fun fact: the number of graduates for 2021-22 at NOVA is exactly the same as the previous year 2020-21, 7,799 (with double 7 and double 9). This identical number two years in a row caused us to check many times to make sure it was not a mistake.
