September is Self-Care Awareness Month!
Did you know that September is Self-Care Awareness Month. Don’t forget about that very special person in your life — you!
Our friends at the Monday Campaigns remind us that “during the course of a busy day, week or month, it’s easy to forget about that very special person in your life—you!” There’s only one you, so it’s important to take good care of yourself. Self-care is fundamental to your health and wellbeing. Additionally, it’s one of the many powerful tools we have available to help gain greater control of stress and prevent burnout. But it’s not only bubble baths and spa days. It includes restorative rest; meditation and breathing deeply; joyful movement; nutritional practices; healthy boundaries; preventative care; taking your lunch breaks; claiming the energy inherent in reflecting on your why; establishing social connections, etc. Self-care means prioritizing the things that keep you well—even when it feels difficult.
Dr. Matthew Sacco, a psychologist for Cleveland Clinics, said self-care should be intentional. You should make sure to set time aside in your normal routine. It also doesn’t have to be something demanding or expensive. Weaving moments of self-care throughout your day is more beneficial than grinding through a hard day and leaving the “you” time for later. Additionally, practicing self-care out loud is a wonderful way to model well being for your family, friends and colleagues.
Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s essential. What will you focus on this week?
