NOVA Donates Retired Bass Drum to Lake Bradock SS

September 25, 2023 / General NOVA News

NOVA Employees worked together across departments and campuses to serve our community!  We love to beat our own drum, so when Facilities staff found an old bass drum in a building being prepped for demolition, we jumped into action! MEC and Alexandria Campus staff worked together to determine where the drum belonged. After a bit of research, they learned that the drum was no longer in use by the NOVA band. With Dr. Eckstein’s approval, warehouse staff across campuses worked to surplus and then donate the drum to Lake Braddock Secondary School (LBSS) in Fairfax County.

Mr. Michael Luley is director of bands for LBSS. He oversees approximately 250 students in both high school and middle school bands and works closely with the elementary school bands in the LBSS pyramid. He is ready to put this old drum to work teaching young percussionists and fostering a love of music. Kids in Fairfax County will now get to enjoy walking to the beat of their own bass drum!

Many thanks to all who worked to serve our community and bring a little rhythm into the lives of our future Nighthawks: Kathy Clement, Bob Bullard, Pam Hesse, Brian Wilburn, Greg Craft, Cesar Torres and Lisa Eckstein!

Michael Luley, wearing glasses, a navy blue polo and grey pants, stands in the Lake Braddock Secondary School band room next to the retired bass drum emblazoned with "Northern Virginia Community College Annandale Campus with NVNVNV in a circle at the center.
