NOVA Esports Kickoff

September 29, 2023 / Our Nighthawks

Following a successful tryout with more than 120 student participants, the 36 students selected for the NOVA Nighthawks’ premier competitive titles were invited to a kickoff celebration. The event, which was attended by more than 20 students, marked the beginning of the competitive year and featured team-building exercises, social activities and freeplay. “Gatherings like this not only help introduce all the new players to each other, but they also build an important sense of belonging and identity for our players as members of an elite collegiate esports program,” said Coach Jordan Whitaker, who works with Coach John O’Neil to coordinate the program.

NOVA Esports prides itself on winning traditions and a close-knit community, having won six national championships in the NJCAAE for Valorant, Rocket League and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. These successes even earned the attention of the Office of the Governor of Virginia, with a congratulatory letter conferred upon the program in April 2022. “Nighthawks win and have a ton of fun and memorable college experiences while doing it. It’s part of our identity in the NOVA Esports program,” said Coach John. “It’s who we are.”

Featured premier titles for Fall 2023 include Valorant, League of Legends, Rocket League and Overwatch 2, with Valorant Violet — our successful all-women Valorant team — making a return.

Let’s go, Nighthawks!
