NOVA’s Early Childhood Program Head, Dr. Christine Schull, Wins 2023 ACCT Faculty Award!
Dr. Christine Schull was awarded the Association of Community College Trustees’ William H. Meardy Faculty Member Award at last week’s 2023 ACCT Leadership Congress in DC. Named in honor of ACCT’s founding executive director, William H. Meardy, who championed the concept of faculty excellence as the foundation of success of the community college movement, the award is presented each year to a faculty member who exemplifies teaching and learning and achievement of excellence in that purpose as it relates directly to the quality of faculty.
Christine Schull, NOVA professor and SCHEV Outstanding Faculty awardee, has been educating students for more than 25 years. She began her career in early learning as an undergraduate student, working in various settings with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged children and adults with developmental disabilities. Prior to transitioning into higher education, she was an elementary school teacher and a research fellow. Dr. Schull is an advocate for her students and her students’ students. Her work ethic demonstrates her commitment to bringing about equity in the field of early childhood development.
“Dr. Schull is a shining example of the raw talent within NOVA’s amazing faculty,” said Dr. Eun-Woo Chang, NOVA’s VP of academic affairs and chief academic officer. “She is absolutely passionate about the education of America’s children and, equally, the education of America’s early childhood educators. We are so very proud of her innovative approaches to teaching, and we are grateful that she has chosen to spend her considerable professional talents teaching the next generation of teachers at NOVA!”
Dr. Schull joined NOVA’s faculty in 2006, becoming the Early Childhood Development program head at the Alexandria Campus in 2016. She began her career as a research fellow and an elementary school teacher in a Spanish immersion program. Her publications and presentations underscore the importance that early education and intervention play in childhood formation. Dr. Schull is a fierce advocate for early childhood education and has served in numerous capacities to advance its role through public discourse.
Dr. Schull holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish literature from Michigan State University, East Lansing; a master’s in child development from Michigan State; and a PhD in family studies from the University of Maryland, College Park.
The ACCT Association Awards recognize outstanding community college trustees, equity programs, chief executive officers, faculty members and professional board staff members from throughout the nation, as well as the tremendous contributions made by community colleges and their leaders to meet the needs of their communities.
