AL Welcomes Ceramic Artist Catherine White, Tomorrow at 1

NOVA welcomes visiting ceramic artist Catherine White to the Alexandria Campus (AFA-146) on Thursday, Oct. 19, with an artist demo from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and a discussion with the artist at 6:30 p.m.

Catherine White weaves together throwing and hand-building techniques. Objects are made with markings and irregularities that intentionally reveal the touch of the hand.

White collects and poetically uses diverse raw materials in her anagama and gas-fired kilns in her Warrenton, Virginia, studio. Her clay work is intertwined with extensive drawing, painting and collaging. The artist, who has an MFA in ceramics, studied painting in Aix-en-Provence, France, and taught ceramics for many years at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, DC.

White has had commissions for state gifts from President Obama and Michelle Obama, and she is represented in the Smithsonian’s Renwick and Sackler galleries. In addition, the artist has produced yearly commissions for Omen Azen, a Japanese restaurant in New York City, since 1982. White has also written for “The Studio Potter” and “The Log Book,” examining failure, drawing, materials and choice.
